Photographers In a Click

Ahh, the Internet... It's crazy to think the number of things we can do with just a click. Digital Communication has been developed each year and presents tons of new technological advances. I believe that Photography has connected us and changed the way we portray the world.

Some of the most interesting aspects of photography I wanted to mention are the new "culture of photography" and how, nowadays, the number of amateurs photographers grew immensely due to the high quality of cameras on smartphones. I think that it is great that people are trying to learn a new skill and benefit from that, since "self-employment is a survival mechanism," as the textbook says in chapter 17. The only thing that I get concerned about is how "perfect" pictures affect people's self-esteem and how much further people would be willing to go in terms of editing their photos and change their body image just to fit into society's standards.

  1. I completely agree, Instagram was literally made for this reason! These new smartphones like the IPhone X/XR, has made this form of digital communication profitable. We see these social media influencers take pictures and edit them to the likings of their followers in order to gain profit online. Society has definitely changed the dynamics of photography. 3. One of the selling points to me when choosing a phone was the camera quality, the Iphone was extremely publicized on how great the camera was. That was something I wanted to obtain and see for myself. I converted over from an Android to an IPhone, granted now a days Androids have just as great of camera quality but during the time that I was transitioning IPhone to me was ahead of the game. I agree that it is concerning how we have to get the “perfect” picture and how a bad picture can affect one’s self esteem. Great job! – Tija Hawkins

Social Media, Our New Obsession

The Internet is considered one of the most revolutionary inventions in the world. That lead to the creation of social media, or social networking sites (SNSs), in which it have been changing the way humans communicate, think, act, do business, and etc. SNSs refers to websites that are designed to allow people to share content (photos, videos, opinions, events) quickly, efficiently, and in real-time. According to the lecture in my Digital Communication class (COM 2733), the first social networking site was created in 1997 by Andrew Weinreich. The website called “SixDegree.com” was the first one to meet the three requirements of a SNS, which were (1) make a public or semi-public profile; (2) communicate with others; and (3) view the entire network. After that, other social media sites were created such as Friendster and, what became famous for many years, MySpace. However, Facebook “changed the game” when it made it possible for the users to have a “news feed” on their home page, all
